Mattresses are one of the most problematic materials to enter the Landfill. Mattresses compact at a rate 400% less than normal garbage. The steel coil springs inside a mattress frequently get wrapped around our equipment during compaction and can cause major damage.

Flagstaff Waste is proud to introduce mattresses to the growing list of recycled products. Recycling mattresses saves energy, and reduces waste, greenhouse gases and the use of natural resources. FRSWMA is partnering with Re-Matt, who can recycle a mattress into 95%–100% of its raw materials and then into reusable products.

As of January 1st, 2016, all mattresses collected by Flagstaff Waste will be sent to Re-Matt for recycling. A fee of $15 per mattress will be collected at the main Landfill and at all Transfer Sites, to recover recycling costs.
